Belinda Jo Carlisle was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, on August 17, 1958, to Harold Carlisle, a gas station employee, and his wife, Joanne, a homemaker.

Carlisle was born nine months after her mother and her father—who was 20 years her senior—met. She was given the name Johnny Belinda in honour of her mother’s favourite movie (1948).

Carlisle’s father left their family when she was five years old, and she has said that the majority of her childhood was spent in poverty. She remembered having “like, two outfits” when she was an adolescent.

Walt Kurczeski, who Carlisle claims was an alcoholic and with whom she had a turbulent relationship, eventually remarried her mother.

From Simi Valley to Reseda and back again until settling in Burbank when Carlisle was seven, the family relocated frequently during her youth.
