Gerry Goffin

Carole King’s first marriage was to American lyricist Gerald Goffin, also known as Gerry Goffin. The two met at Queens College. They started collaborating on songwriting and became partners. They started dating and they got married. At the time Carole was 17 years.

Their marriage was a Jewish ceremony. They got married in August 1959, on Long Island. They wrote more than two dozen chart hits. Most of the hits have become standards for different artists. During their marriage, Gerry cheated with Earl-Jean McCrea and had a daughter.

Carole King and Gerry Goffin’s union dissolved in 1968. They had two daughters, Louise Goffin and Sherry Goffin Kondor. On June 19, 2014, in Los Angeles, California, U.S., Gerry died. He died at the age of 75. He is survived by his fourth wife, Michele Goffin, and his five children.

Carole King said: “Gerry Goffin was my first love. He had a profound impact on my life and the rest of the world. Gerry was a good man and a dynamic force, whose words and creative influence will resonate for generations to come. His legacy to me is our two daughters, four grandchildren, and our songs that have touched millions and millions of people, as well as a lifelong friendship.”

Carole King was married for the second time to musician Charles Larkey. Charles Larkey was a bassist for several bands. He was a member of The Myddle Class among others. He played bass guitar on some of Carole’s recordings in the 1970s.

Carole King and Charles Larkey were in a group called “The City” alongside guitarist, session musician, producer, and songwriter Danny Kortchmar. Charles on bass, Danny on guitar and vocals, and Carole on piano and vocals. The group is known for the album Now That Everything’s Been Said.

Carole King and Charles Larkey welcomed two children: Levi Larkey and Molly Larkey. They were married from 1970 to 1976. According to Carole on the reason for their split, she said: “Our situation, we split up because Charlie was really into playing music. He loved playing music and playing in bands and that was not my scene”.

“He got into that scene and hanging out, and hours, truly, it was hours. We loved each other. There was no other issue except that he was living the life of a musician and I was living the life of a domestic housewife, and ultimately it wasn’t working.”

Rick Evers

Carole King didn’t give up on marriage, she married her third husband, Rick Evers. Rick was a songwriter. The pair met at a party thrown by Don Henley. They relocated into a cabin in Idaho and lived outside the busy city. After relocating to Idaho Carole became involved in environmental issues.

Carole King and Rick Evers were married from August 24, 1977, until they got separated and Rick died in 1978. Before Rick’s death, he had a serious argument with Carole. Per some sources, Rick Evers tried to throw Carole through a large glass window.

Carole made it known in her 2012 memoir that, on regular basis, she got physically abused by her husband, Rick Evers. Rick died of a cocaine overdose in March 1978, in Los Angeles County, California, USA. Carole shared in her memoir:

“I had always been judgmental about women who stayed in abusive relationships. I’d always thought, if I found myself with a man like that, the first time he struck me I’d be out of there in a New York minute. I would never stay with an abuser. Until I did.”

Rick Sorenson

Rick Sorenson is Carole King’s fourth husband. They met through a mutual friend. Rick reportedly worked as a carpenter and lived in a teepee. He is a very private person. The couple purchased a ranch together in Idaho and stayed out of the limelight. Carole and Rick were married from 1982 until 1989. Carole had a busy schedule which put a strain on their marriage.
