Early Life

Diahann Carroll was born Carol Diann Johnson on July 17, 1935, in Bronx, New York City. Her parents are John Johnson, a subway conductor, and Mabel Faulk, a nurse. She attended dancing, singing, and modeling classes at a tender age. She got a Metropolitan Opera scholarship for studies at New York’s High School of Music and Art.

Diahann Carroll did a modeling assignment for “Ebony” magazine at age 15 and auditioned for Arthur Godfrey’s radio program “Talent Scouts”. She gained attention and recognition after the contest. She learned at New York University, where she majored in sociology.

Career

Diahann Carroll is a beloved and elegant actress, singer, and recording artist. At age 18, Diahann took part as a contestant on the DuMont Television Network program, Chance of a Lifetime, hosted by Dennis James, where she received the $1,000 top prize for a rendition of the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein song, “Why Was I Born?”.

Diahann Carroll won the following four weeks. Her film debut was a supporting role in Carmen Jones (1954). She took a title role in Julia. She played the role of Dominique Deveraux, a mixed-race diva, in the prime-time soap opera Dynasty. She starred in Claudine alongside James Earl Jones.

Diahann’s father decided not to attend her wedding to Monte. The duo married in 1956, presided over by Adam Clayton Powell Jr. at the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. They have a daughter Suzanne Kay, born September 9, 1960, who became a journalist and screenwriter. They separated in 1962.

Diahann Carroll also got married to Fred Glusman, a Las Vegas boutique owner. She surprised the press with her marriage to Fred Glusman however, after four months of marriage she filed for divorce citing physical abuse. Their divorce was finalized two months later.

Diahann Carroll also married Robert DeLeon, on May 25, 1975. Robert DeLeon is a managing editor of “Jet” magazine. She met Robert at the time Robert assigned himself to a cover story on Carroll about her 1975 Oscar nomination for Claudine. Diahann was widowed after Robert was killed in a car crash on March 31, 1977.

Diahann Carroll’s final marriage was to singer Vic Damone. Vic Damone was an American traditional pop and big band singer, actor, radio and television presenter, and entertainer.
