Hughie Fury Facts

  • He has been primarily trained by his father Peter who has a seedy past concerning his experiences with the underworld. Peter had been jailed twice during Hughie’s childhood and used to run a drug empire from behind the bars.
  • In May 2016, Peter had claimed in the media that Hughie was operating only at about 30 or 40 percent of his potential because of an ongoing skin condition that was causing him fatigue and affecting his immune system. He had also stated that Hughie had been battling these health issues since January 2015. It was later revealed that the badly infected blood in his system was poisoning him from within. Hughie would go on to mention that he had experienced such acne since he was 15 years old. After months of treatment, he had overcome the issue, by the end of 2017.
  • In December 2016, after Joseph Parker’s WBO heavyweight title victory; Hughie, who was ranked number 2 by the WBO, was in contention to fight Joseph next. The bout was scheduled to be held in New Zealand on May 6, 2017.
  • However, in March 2017, Peter had been denied entry into New Zealand due to his criminal past. In the mid-1990s, he had been incarcerated for 10 years for drug-related offenses. After several negotiations with the local authorities, Peter had been granted a 2-month visa to enter New Zealand so that he could prepare Hughie for the title challenge. All the effort turned out to be in vain though because the fight was later rescheduled to September 2017.
