Although he is known as Elvis Costello, his real name is Declan Patrick MacManus, and he is an English singer-songwriter and record producer.

He has received numerous awards throughout his career, including Grammy Awards in 1999 and 2020, and has been nominated twice for the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist. One of the highlights of his fantastic career came when he made it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the year 2003.

Early Life

He was born on August 25, 1954, at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, and his father is of Irish descent.

He is the son of jazz trumpeter and vocalist Ross MacManus, who performed with the Joe Loss Orchestra and later as a solo cabaret act.

In 1970, MacManus senior had a hit in Australia (as Day Costello) with his cover of the Beatles’ “The Long and Winding Road.”

The renowned musician grew up in Twickenham and attended St. Edmund’s Catholic Primary School in nearby Whitton, as well as Archbishop Myers Secondary Modern R.C. School (now St Mark’s Catholic School) in nearby Hounslow.

In 1971, he moved to Birkenhead, near her hometown of Liverpool, with his mother, where he formed his first band, “Rusty.”

After graduating from St. Francis Xavier’s College, MacManus worked a variety of office jobs to support himself, most notably as a data entry clerk at Elizabeth Arden.

This is referred to as the “vanity factory” in the lyrics of “I’m Not Angry.” He also worked as a computer operator at the Midland Bank computer center in Bootle for a short time.

Elvis Costello Children

Costello has three marriages, the first to Mary Burgoyne in 1974, with whom he had a son, Matthew.

Toward the end of his first marriage, Costello became involved in an on-again, off-again romance with Bebe Buell, Todd Rundgren’s then-girlfriend.

Buell has claimed that she was the inspiration for some of Costello’s most bitter love songs from the Armed Forces era, but Costello has claimed that most of those songs were written before he met Buell.

While producing the Pogues’ album Rum Sodomy and the Lash in 1985, Costello became involved with Cait O’Riordan, then the bassist of the London Irish group the Pogues. They got married in 1986 and divorced by the end of 2002.

Costello proposed to pianist-vocalist Diana Krall in May 2003, and they married on December 6, 2003, at Elton John’s home.

On December 6, 2006, Krall gave birth to twin sons, Dexter Henry Lorcan and Frank Harlan James, in New York City.

Humanitarian Causes

Costello serves on the Advisory Board of the Jazz Foundation of America’s board of directors.

Since 2006, Costello has been a featured performer in the Jazz Foundation’s annual benefit A Great Night in Harlem.

Costello has volunteered his time with the Jazz Foundation of America to help save the homes and lives of America’s elderly jazz and blues musicians, including those who were affected by Hurricane Katrina.

He has also performed at a Seva Foundation benefit concert.

Elvis Costello health

On doctor’s orders, Costello canceled the remaining six dates of his European tour in July 2018, while recovering from cancer surgery. Costello apologized to his fans and said he initially thought he was well enough to finish the tour.
